To me an ideal ranch Christmas is a warm lit fire place crackling and the smell of a real Christmas tree plus a hint of leather. Somehow there’s always leather. Am I right? It’s homestyle food cooking and good whisky. Babies peacefully sleeping and snuggling up on the couch watching an old western. Snow falling and Christmas tree lights sparkling. Ranch puppies laid up on their dog beds keeping watch and nightfall bringing in the nostalgia like no other.
But at the end of the day, we all know what a ranch Christmas is like. It’s freezing your tail off going to feed because the hands are gone to spend time with their own families. It’s waking up early to put out hay and bust ice. And somehow, it never fails that the pretty snow falling leads to a pipe busting. The baby is most likely crying and the nice clean house doesn’t stay clean for long because… well because it’s a ranch. And those ranch puppies most likely smell like wet dog and it always seems like one of them isn’t fond of the trees. By that I mean, there’s always the one that thinks they have to mark the dang thing. Damn dogs.
Honestly, at the end of the day, a ranch Christmas is still work just like any other day on the ranch. Even though the work never ends, I don’t know a rancher that would have it any other way. Its a blessing and a curse, but more a blessing than anything. There’s nothing like waking up a rancher and being in God’s country. Sure there is an easier way of living that’s much, much more luxurious. Ranching isn’t for everyone. That’s for sure!
Regardless, it really is the most wonderful time of the year and we wouldn’t have it any other way!
Here are some pictures of my “Ranch Christmas” decor. Although, these are just pictures. Don’t be fooled… my home is not always this cool. I mean, I am a realist so let’s be honest. We all know that bloggers show the good stuff, but this is life and it’s not always magazine ready. Oh, and don’t judge me by the fact that I have zero presents under the tree yet! 😂
